Traverse and Take-up for Winding Applications

Dedicated SmartMotorTM Firmware Creates Custom Spooling Patterns to Eliminate Product Waste

What is Traverse and Take-up?

Material such as fine copper wire or fiber optics cannot be kinked or jammed between prior layers of wound material on the spool because it could potentially lead to drops in quality and reduced product life. Traverse and Take-Up winding applications help to lower the risk of material breakage or jamming, so the end user has a more reliable finished product.

To provide optimal winding of these materials, each layer must be wound in a way that prevents it from getting stuck in the previous layers. As seen in the video above, the SmartMotorTM is programmed to wind a special pattern onto the spool. Each layer is done at an opposing angle to the previous layer so that the material never runs along a path parallel to the underlying layer. This method prevents the material from getting trapped or kinked when additional layers increase forces inward on the spool.
